Ohori Dojo

Ohori Judo Club was originally built as a training venue for Stewart and Cathy Brain.  Both Stewart and Cathy represented Australia at the Olympic Games.  Stewart 1988 and Cathy 1988, 1992, 1996.  They were successful international players representing Australia for many years and gained bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Their dedication to the sport and the desire to pass on their knowledge led to official classes commencing in the early 1990’s.  Over the years many students have benefited from Cathy and Stewart’s skills and made their own way in the judo world.

Ohori Judo Club is recognized as one of the most successful clubs in Australia producing many Australian champions and Australian representatives.  Recently Arnie Dickins represented Australia at the London 2012 Olympics, along with Stewart who was the Australian coach.  Arnie and Chloe Rayner competed in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where Chloe won bronze in the U48kg division.  Chloe and Ellen Wright are currently in the shadow team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Toshi Nakamura is a very well respected international judo coach who has just finished his time as Australian Talent Identification Coach.  We are fortunate that Toshi loves the Queensland weather and has relocated from Canberra to be our Head Coach.  He is working closely with our senior players to continue to develop their skills.  Toshi is also coaching our junior players to help them grow and develop a love for judo. He also brings traditional Japanese culture to our club.

Cathy Brain has been coaching the juniors at Ohori since classes began in the early 1990’s.  She has been a pivotal member at Ohori and has guided many junior players through to the senior classes.  Cathy continues to coach the younger players and has been President of Ohori for more than 20 years.

Our assistant coaches mainly consist of players who have now introduced their own children to the sport.  It is very common in our sport for parents that have participated in judo at a young age to introduce their own offspring to the art of judo.
